canals and rivers

Dhaleswari originates from the Yamuna river at the north western end of Tangail district. It then splits into two - the northern part flows into the Dhaleswari and the southern part flows into the Kaliganga. These two branch rivers meet near Manikganj district, and the combined stream flows as Dhaleswari and joins the Shitalaksha river near Narayanganj district and subsequently falls into the Meghna river. The Dhaleswari is now a tributary of the Yamuna, but in ancient times it was probably the main course of the Padma River. Between 1600 and 2000, the course of the Padma changed drastically. It is believed that at some point the main course of Padma flowed through the Rampur-Boalia area and Chalan Beel, and then fell into the Meghna through the Dhaleswari and Buriganga rivers. In the 18th century the lower course of the Padma was further south. In the mid-19th century, the main flow shifted from Dhaleswari to the southern flow, the Kirtinasha river, which is now the main course of the Padma.
